A cascade of processes induced by the detection of DNA damage within a cell. A cascade of processes initiated in response to the detection of DNA damage, and resulting in the induction of transcription. The series of molecular events whereby information is sent from one location to another within a cell. A cascade of processes induced by the cell cycle regulator phosphoprotein p53, or an equivalent protein, resulting in the induction of the transcription of p21 (also known as WAF1, CIP1 and SDI1) or any equivalent protein, in response to the detection of DNA damage. A change in state or activity of a cell (in terms of movement, secretion, enzyme production, gene expression, etc.) as a result of a stimulus indicating damage to its DNA from environmental insults or errors during metabolism.
